Agua fresca is more than a beverage. It's a celebration of hydration and flavor. Originating from Mexico, this drink artfully blends fresh fruits, water, and a touch of sweetness. It epitomizes the spirit of summer, offering a refreshing escape from the heat.

Cuisine Mexican
- ½ teaspoon grated ginger: This will give your drink a refreshing kick.
- 3 cups cold filtered water: A must for a clean fresh taste.
- 4 cups mixed fresh fruit finely chopped: Choose fruits you love! Watermelon, pineapple, or strawberries work fantastically.
- A small pinch of sea salt: This balances and enhances the flavors beautifully.
- Juice of 1 fresh lime: The acidity of lime cuts through sweetness creating balance.
- 1 tablespoon pure honey or your favorite natural sweetener: This adds the perfect touch of sweetness.
Step 1: Prepare Your Fruits
Start by selecting your fruits. Wash them thoroughly. The fresher the fruit, the better your agua fresca will be. Chop them into smaller pieces and set them aside. I often prefer a mix of watermelon, strawberries, and pineapple for a tropical twist.
Step 3: Strain If Desired
If you prefer a smoother texture, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a pitcher. Press the pulp with a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. If you enjoy the pulp and fiber, skip this step! Your choice.
Step 4: Sweeten to Taste
Taste your agua fresca. Does it need sweetness? If so, add the honey or sweetener in small increments. Remember, you can always add more, but it’s hard to take sweetness away!
Here are some helpful tips to perfect your agua fresca:
Use Ripe Fruit: The flavor greatly depends on fruit quality. Go for what's in season for the best taste.
Adjust Sweetness: Everyone has different taste preferences. Start with less sweetener and build up.
Experiment with Flavors: Don’t hesitate to mix and match fruits or add herbs like basil or mint.
Make it Ahead: Agua fresca can be made a day in advance. Just give it a good stir before serving.
Serve Chilled: It’s most enjoyable when cold, especially on a summer day.
