- For this recipe I’ve fine-tuned the ingredients a bit to bring out the best flavors while keeping it simple. Here’s what you'll need:
Using Moka Pot:
- - ½ cup water fill to just below the safety valve
- - 3 to 4 tablespoons ground coffee medium roast for great balance
- - 1 teaspoon cocoa powder optional, adds a delightful depth
Instant Version:
- - 1 cup water
- - ½ teaspoon instant coffee powder or 1 teaspoon for stronger coffee
- - ½ teaspoon brown sugar optional, for a hint of sweetness
Using Filter:
- - ¾ cup water for your brewing
- - 3 teaspoons ground coffee freshly ground is best
- - Cinnamon pinch optional, for warmth
- Feel free to adjust sugars or skip them entirely depending on your taste!
Step 1: Using Moka Pot
Preparation of the Moka Pot: Grab your moka pot and remove the upper chamber. Fill the lower part with water until just below the safety valve. It’s essential not to overfill; you want the steam to build just right.
Add Coffee Grounds: Place the perforated basket back in. Spoon in your ground coffee, leveling it off with a butter knife. Take care not to pack it too tightly—it should be a touch loose.
Assembly: Screw the upper chamber back onto the moka pot securely. Make sure it’s tight but don't overdo it; you want to avoid any spills during brewing.
Brewing: Set your moka pot on low heat. As it warms up, the delicious coffee will begin to flow into the upper chamber. You’ll notice it starts strong but becomes lighter. Once the bubbling slows down, it’s time to remove it from heat.
Serving Your Coffee: Once brewed, stir it gently to ensure the flavors are even. Pour it into your serving cup, and add hot water to reach your desired strength. Mix well and enjoy!
Step 2: Instant Version
Water Preparation: Begin by bringing 1 cup of water to a boil.
Mixing: In your serving cup, add the instant coffee powder along with the brown sugar if you’re using it. Pour in a bit of the hot water and stir until fully dissolved.
Finishing Touches: Slowly add the remaining hot water to fill your cup. Stir until combined, and you have a quick, satisfying cup of black coffee ready!
Step 3: Using Filter
Setting Up the Filter: Start by placing the top chamber of your coffee filter onto the lower compartment.
Coffee Grounds: Spoon in your ground coffee, ensuring it’s evenly spread. If you love strong coffee, feel free to use more grounds.
Water Addition: Pour ¾ cup of hot water into the top chamber. Cover and leave it undisturbed for about 20 minutes. This patience allows the coffee to drip through slowly for a richer decoction.
Serving Your Brew: Once dripped, pour about ¼ cup of decoction into a serving glass. Add the remaining water based on your preference for strength. Stir to combine and sweeten if you like. Your black coffee is ready to serve!

- Adjust the coffee grind size; a medium to fine grind works great for most methods.
- Always preheat your water for a quicker brew and better flavor extraction.
- Experiment with adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for a unique twist.
